SKETCHBOOK 21

In 2021, sketching shifted from being primarily about efficiency to becoming a space for play. Rather than focusing on speed or refinement, I began to use sketches as a way to experiment - testing forms, textures, and visual languages without the pressure of committing to a final outcome. Curiosity drove the process, opening possibilities that might not lead to finished work but often sparked new directions.

At the same time, I found myself paying closer attention to presentation. Placing sketches against textured, atmospheric backdrops - fabric, timber, shadows - gave them weight and presence. These settings weren’t simply aesthetic choices; they reframed the sketches, situating them in the material world they might one day inhabit.

This period reminded me that sketching isn’t only about documentation. It’s also about creating conditions for ideas to wander, to remain provisional, and to exist in dialogue with their surroundings. In that way, play and presentation became inseparable parts of the design process.
